Here is a Wooden family name sign, this will be an indoor sign so for texture purposes the second layer will be raised using thin felt. This unique wood sign is not much different than a 2 layer wood sign most people make with 1/4" ( 6.3mm) plywood and a top layer of the same or thinner wood. This making gives a different look with a soft glow.

Step 1) to start I opened a fresh XCS Xtool Creation Suite, from other software I made up a welded/united family name in the desired font. This I will be setting eventually to cut with the setting I found for felt as 38% power 11mm/s speed 1 pass

Step 2) once I had the family name in the work area, I created an oval shape using the insert feature and unlocking the shape so I could make the oval around the family name.

Step 3) once I found the desired shape around the name I selected to copy and made a second one and adjusted it a little bit larger to create a frame like border. I then moved the family name away so I could center and group the outter ring together.

Step 4) once again I needed yet another ring this time even bigger than the first 2, this one however will be the very outside edge of the 1/4" (6.3mm) plywood and it will be cut as such.

Step 5) before going to the laser to cut the plywood, I turned off the output to the inside ringed border and the family name as you can see I have adjusted the setting for them to be cut at 38% power 11mm/s speed and 1 pass This I found with a 10W pro it cuts the felt perfectly. So with that being said it is off to the laser to cut the actual plywood the settings for this will be 100% 5mm/s speed and 3 passes. this gives a clean cut if you are using a 5w machine or a 20w machine these will need to be adjusted.

Step 6) First I adjusted the settings by turning off the output to the plywood oval and turned on the output to the family name and border which would be the felt. Now here comes the tricky step, once the plywood has been cut and the laser machine has come to a stop, without moving anything I gently put the felt over the cut plywood. This procedure has 2 different effects, one it allows the felt cut exactly like it is set up in the software and the second reason it also slightly burns through to the plywood to give you a guide to line everything up once it is ready for assembly. As an added bonus because I didn't move anything there was no reason to frame again. Here you can see it cutting the felt with no issues.

Step 7) once the felt had finished cutting and the laser machine has finished I moved the gantry out of the way ( helps to have the extensions) I then gently removed all the extra material around the outside of the cut, I discarded these pieces as they are not needed. Without moving anything else I took the carrier sheet ( tacky clear sheet) I mentioned earlier put it over the felt, I used a piece large enough to cover all of the felt. I firmly pressed down on the sheet so that all the felt would come up with the carrier sheet in one piece to keep everything lined up.

Step 8) before I get to the felt part of this 2 layer project I take some trusty 500grit sand paper to remove any burning or undesired marking that may have been created from cutting the felt on top of the plywood, after this is done which only takes a few quick passes with the sand paper I brush it off to clean off any dust.

Step 9) once the plywood is ready I take the carrier sheet that has the felt stuck to it and with the sticky side up I gently remove all of the un-wanted bits and pieces, this some call weeding of sorts. Once that was cleaned up from the pieces not needed I then took spray adhesive and gave it a light coat. Giving the glue a few minutes to set, I then took the felt and flipped it over and gingerly lined it up with the marking from earlier. Once I was satisfied I was lined up close enough I firming pressed onto the plywood so the felt would stay in place. I then slowly started to remove the carrier sheet by rolling it away keeping mindful the felt wasn't lifting. A small piece of felt started to lift while I was removing the carrier sheet but just pressed down again with my finger until the entire sheet was all lifted. i then simply pressed the felt all down to make sure it was secure and lined up.

Step 10) final step, the wooden felt 2 layer sign is finished ready to be hung on the wall for all to enjoy the unique texture from the felt and the great contrast the 2 different material creates. Hope you enjoyed this and try it yourself for a different look.....
