Step 1: Paint and Prepare the Wood

Paint a 12" square piece of 3mm wood half red and half blue, this will yield a single luminary.  I have a full square of both red and blue and will be making 2.

I wanted a more rustic look for this project so I chose to dilute the acrylic paint and apply it with a sponge brush.

Let dry completely before cutting.

Step 2: Import the Design

Import the design into the software.  You will be cutting the 2 star panels from the BLUE painted wood and the 2 stripe panels from the RED painted wood.  Cut the base from either color wood or a scrap piece of wood that is the same thickness.

Step 3: Prepare the Vellum

To give the luminary it's soft light effect I'll be using vellum. I don't want to cut this on the laser as I'm not sure if it's safe or how it will react.  I've chosen to cut by hand.  You'll need a single sheet of 8.5" x 11" vellum with a minimum weight of 29 lb.  Cut 4 pieces measuring 3.6" x 3.7".

Step 4: Prepare for Laser Cutter and Scoring

Place the BLUE painted wood securely onto the laser bed.  The RED layer will be cut and the BLUE layer will score.

Once complete place the RED painted wood onto the laser bed and cut 2 stripe panels with the same settings.

I've chosen to cut the base from scrap wood.  It's the same wood unpainted.

Step 5: Apply the Vellum to the Panels

I'm using wood glue for this, it's what I have on hand and it works for me.  Apply a dot of glue to each corner of the vellum and place “long” side from top to bottom.  Apply to all 4 panels.

Step 6: Assembly

Apply glue to the panels as shown in the picture.  Glue the luminary together and let dry.

Step 7: Finishing Touches

You could use a flameless candle for this project, or a string of lights curled up inside.

Make a few more and add lights to some and floral arrangements to the other.

Enjoy.
