A wonderful gift for any educator is a unique wood engraved desk name plate, which goes beyond the conventional. In this project, I will guide you through the steps to create a similar tag.

Step 1: Plan the Space

The first step is to consider the size  and spacing of the design. For this project I have figured roughly 4 inches is a good width that won't take up too much space for the project.

Step 2: Text and Outline

The next step was to add in text and an outline.  Of course as you complete your own version of this project, you will add in your own name.  When adding the outline, be sure to use an outline padding that is sufficient enough to connect each letter.

Step 3: Add a base

We will add this text to a base, but in order to get a good connection, we need to first add in a rectangle to provide a straight edge along the bottom.

The settings are for the D1 5W laser.  You may need to adjust the settings for your laser configuration.

Be sure to follow all the safety guidelines for your laser and always wear personal protective equipment when the laser is in operation.

Step 5: Create the Base

For the final step, I grabbed some scrap Ash I had in the garage and added some stain.  I then set up my table saw to only cut about 2 mm deep on the block.

Step 6: Cut a slot for the name tag

The final step is to run the block through the saw cutting a single kerf.  this is about 3mm, so this matches up perfectly with our name tag since it was cut from 3mm basswood plywood.   You may need to sand a little to knock of the edges and to get a good fit.

Be sure to use push blocks and use proper procedures when using your table saw.  Safety is number one priority, so if cutting a small seems unsafe, you may consider using a different tool for the job.
