Information
Valentines day isn't just for lovers. I created this heart with a mother and baby giraffe to gift to my daughter who is a zookeeper and works with giraffes. Giraffes are our favourite animals, and instead of something 'romantic or soppy' I decided to create this for Valentines Day! This will be the last valentines day I gift her as she has now turned 18 and has her own boyfriend to treat her on February 14th so its a sentimental gift for both of us!

Step1: Organisation

To start organise your project into the groups of material you want to cut.

NOTE: Each heart has not been grouped so make sure you select all the elements of each heart when you move the design.

For example - the backing and sunset (1) are cut of MDF so that they paint easily.

Layer 2 was made with walnut veneer

Layer 3 and the front were made form cherry veneer

If you wish you can add a layer in between layer 3 and the front with clear acrylic. I didn't do this but will try this as eventually I want to make one with led lights to illunimate the sun or edges.

Step2: Backing and layer 1 (sunset)

To start, place the material in the laser that you are using for these two layers. Select the thickness and the appropriate cutting setting for your material.

Ensure that all elements are set to cut and set the words ‘mdf backing’ and ‘1’ to ignore.

Also ensure that all other elements of the design are set to ignore.

Use the camera on your laser to adjust where the layers are to be cut.

When happy process the cut.

Remove from the laser and put to one side.

Step3: Layer 2

Also ensure that all other elements of the design are set to ignore.

Step5: Acrylic

This is an optional layer which I haven't used in this cut but plan to in the future.

Cut out as needed and when assembling, assemble inbetween the giraffe layer and the front

Step6: Painting

Paint the mdf backing in your choice of colour and let dry.

Paint the sun and the mountains. This photo shows the sun and mountains separate, however I've redesigned it so they are together.

Allow the paint to dry or usr a hairdryer to speed up the process.

Step7: Assemble
Preview

Once the paint is dry, use wood glue to carefully assemble the heart.

The order is as follows;

  • painted backing
  • Sunset and mountains
  • tree
  • giraffes
  • acrylic (if using)
  • front frame

Allow the heart to dry, you can add some weight to the top of the heart to allow the layers to bond well ie place a heavy book on top.

Once finished display or gift as you wish.
