    I stumbled across this picture on a random wiki, I think, and turns out that those kinds of pictures are REALLY nice for engraving with... Then painting the engraved pieces afterwards! Sharpies works too.
    
    If you engrave at lower speeds, you can start playing with how lights passes through the wood. Interesting things happens if you use paint when the wood is thin... Like stained glass art!
