  • Description
A laser cut model commemorating the starship Enterprise of the original Star Trek.
Let me start by saying this is not my design. It was posted by JoeSnuffie on Thingiverse: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1902315. Thingiverse is a free repository of design files that focuses primarily on 3D printing. There are some laser files there as well, and I thought this one was exceptional.
When you download the files, there are several file formats, some of them quite out of date. DXF seems to be the best choice for today's lasers.
Joe also provides a PDF detailing the build process, which includes lots of nice big pictures.
You will find the design is in three colors, we will import those as layers. The Red layer is text to be engraved. Be careful that the inner part of some letters, the counter-space, is not filled in.
Next will you will need to score the blue lines and text. This will put a small number on each part to aid in the assembly process. When you glue the pieces in place, glue them with this identifying number down.
Finally the parts which make up the ship are drawn with black lines. When cutting these lines, you will want to manage your air assist. It is important to keep soot to a minimum.
