Week 4 A gift for myself. Personalized laser etched glass - xTool Projects
New
I rarely make something for myself. This was probably the hardest assignment. But I started thinking about what I hold dear to my heart and figured I wanted something that would remind me of the things I love. That is why I etched this glass with a personalized saying. Not only because it looks cool but because it is in my wife's handwriting and it will always remind me of her.

The first thing I did was I gave my wife an assignment to write me a personalized saying that she loves on this glass with a sharpie. Don't worry if you mess up, you can just take alcohol and wipe it off and then re-write it if you need to.

Next is you need to setup your rotary. You do this by taking measurements and inputting those into the rotary setup tools. One issue I had was that my glass was bottom heavy. To fix this I could have either used a chuck, or I found something heavy that could roll. In my case, a socket with an extension bar worked perfectly and held it in place. You want to measure at the most wide part of the glass as that is what is touching the roller. This is also where you will focus your laser to avoid the laser hitting your glass.

here you can see my rotary settings. This can help you setup these settings. I only have the RA1 so if you have something different you might want to check those settings.

Then you just make a box that will cover the area you want. It is important to take those measurements to make sure you engrave all of the writing. The good thing about this method is that if you mess this up, it is not the end of the world because you can just go back over the parts you missed. In my video you can see I had to do that. I used 100mm/s for my 40w at 35% power. This was perfect.

Once finished make sure you brush the etched glass. I use a hard bristled toothbrush to do that. This will get all the glass that is loose off the etching. After that, you are finished. Easy Peasy.
