This multilayered project is a great decoration for your fresh egg collection. I'll walk you through the steps to create this and cut it out with your xtool laser.

Step 1: Base Design

For this project, I wanted to have the overall shape be a chicken.  It is important to find an image that has a distinctive shape, so that it can be easily recognizable.  I began by importing the image and using the outline tool to get the overall shape of the chicken..  I then ran the outline tool again to get the double outline shown in the image.

Step 2: Unite the outlines

Right now, the two outlines are independent vectors.  We need to select both, ensuring the inner vector is in the foreground, and use the combine tool to subtract the inner vector from the outer layer.  The result is a single vector that is the narrow band outlining the chicken shape.

Step 3: Build text and connect

Next, we need to add in text.  The trick with this step is to get the letters connected.  You can use  script font or in this case I used a font and just connected the letters myself.

To make the connection, I export the text as an SVG, then import it back into the canvas.  This makes each letter its own vector.  You can then position it as needed.  I tried to overlap them where possible and in some cases I added simple shapes to make the connection.

Use the combine tool to unite each letter to the outline of the chicken we made in previous steps.

Step 4: Backing board

Next, use the outline tool to get an outline over the design and copy it to another canvas.  Because of the material size, I am splitting this job up.

Step 5: Accent Designs.

To help fill in the design, I added additional accents that will make this look more like a chicken.  The nice thing is that this will be on the top layer and we can make this inside the overall chicken outline, reducing the amount of waste material.

Step 6: Settings

The settings are for the D1 5W laser.  You may need to adjust the settings for your laser configuration.

Be sure to follow all the safety guidelines for your laser and always wear personal protective equipment when the laser is in operation.
